As with any major feature update, Microsoft brings new applications and features to Windows 10. The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is no different with new features such as the Windows Sandbox to test untrusted apps, a new Light Theme experience, and a decoupled Windows Search and Cortana.

Windows 10 version 1903 also introduces enhanced control over the installation of Windows updates and an improved troubleshooting experience.

Here's a closer look at all the big changes.

Windows Sandbox

The update introduces a simple virtualization feature called the Windows Sandbox. This feature allows you to run Windows 10 in a virtual machine where anything you do in it does not affect the main operating system.

This allows you to use it to test suspicious programs, web extensions, or web sites for malware or malicious purposes without having fear that it could affect your data or programs.

Microsoft describes Windows Sandbox as a lightweight desktop environment, as it is less than 100mb in size. Unlike the virtual machines, Sandbox uses the existing Windows 10 installation media to create the image for the virtual machine and it is listed as a standard application on the Start menu.

Windows Sandbox isn't supported on all PCs and it is disabled by default, so you've to make some changes to your PC to use Sandbox.

Sandbox requirements
  • Windows 10 Pro or above.
  • Requires a 64-bit processor with at least two cores, but quad-core CPU device with multi-threading is recommended.
  • Virtualization should be enabled from the BIOS settings.
  • At least 4GB of RAM required, though 8GB is recommended.
  • 1GB of disk space, preferably SSD.
Installing Sandbox
  • Open Start menu.
  • Type 'Windows Features'.
  • Click on 'Turn Windows features on or off control panel' result.
  • Locate Windows Sandbox and enable it.
  • Click on 'OK'.
  • You'll find Windows Sandbox application in Start > All apps.

Once started, it will appear as a new installation of Windows 10 running within a window like an application. You can open, download and run any files or programs in Sandbox and no changes will be made to the actual system.

Once it is closed, everything is permanently deleted.

Windows Light theme

May 2019 Update introduces a true "Light Theme" that turns apps, taskbar, Star, Action Center, notifications, flyouts into light shaded colour from dark.

To enable the light theme and turn everything into light shade, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Navigate to Personalization > Colors.
  3. Select the light option under 'Choose your color'.

More information about the Windows 10 Light Theme can be found here.

Windows Update is better and smarter

In Windows 10 version 1903, Microsoft is providing an new Windows Update experience so that users have more control over how updates are installed. The interface of Windows Update has been updated to now include a pause button right below the 'Check for updates' trigger.

May 2019 Update also allows Windows 10 Home users to defer feature updates by using the "Pause" button so that Windows updates can be delayed  for up to seven days.

In Windows 10 version 1903, when a new cumulative update has been downloaded, a new icon would appear on your taskbar to remind you that the system requires a reboot.

Also added, is a new prompt when featured updates are available. Instead of installing it immediately, Windows 10 will prompt you to "Download and install now" when you are ready to install it.

Finally, there is a smarter Active Hours feature that uses AI to figure out when you’re least likely to use your PC.

This feature is disabled by default, but you can enable it from Settings > Update & Security > Change active hours.

Decoupled Windows Search and Cortana

May 2019 Update splits Windows Search and Cortana so that they are not part of the same user interface element but rather have their own space on the taskbar.

You'll now find two icons - Search and Cortana. If you click on the search icon, you'll be able to search for everything in your libraries and even initiate Cortana features such as 'Remind me'.

Search is now faster and better

As search is getting its own home, there is also a setting where you can configure Windows Search's indexing feature.

You can speed up the Windows Search and include all your local drives contents. In October 2018 Update or older, Microsoft only indexed your document libraries.

May 2019 Update introduces enhanced mode for Search to include entire PC files and make search function faster. Windows Search indexer can be configured from Settings > Search > Searching Windows.

Automated troubleshooting

Windows 10's Troubleshooting feature is getting better and it uses Microsoft's new AI technology to automatically recommend the best settings for sound, internet, apps and more.

Windows Troubleshooter may also automatically launch in response to a particular problem, such as an inability to connect to the Internet.
