Microsoft has stated that they will not allow devices to upgrade to Windows 10 version 1903, otherwise known as the May 2019 Update, if they are running older versions of the anti-cheat software called BattlEye. This is because older versions of the software could cause Windows 10 to crash in version 1903.

In a support bulletin, Microsoft has stated that they have placed a compatibility hold on devices using older versions of the BattlEye ant-cheat software so that Windows 10 version 1903 will not be offered.

"To keep your gaming experience safe, Microsoft has placed a compatibility hold on devices with the impacted versions of BattlEye software. This means that the Windows 10, version 1903 update won't be offered to those PCs until the incompatible version of Battleye is removed or replaced. We recommend that you don't attempt to manually update using the Update now button or the Media Creation Tool until you have installed an updated version of BattlEye software that resolves this issue."

The BattlEye anti-cheat software is utilized by many popular games including Fortnite, PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds (PUBG),  ARMA II, ARMA III, DAYZ, H1Z1, ARK: Survival Evolved, Planetside 2, Rainbow Six Siege, and many more. For a full list, you can visit the BattlEye web site.

An update has already been released by BattlEye and been provided to game developers for known games that are affected by this issue, but unless you upgrade your games, you will not receive the fix.

Microsoft recommends the following steps if you are unable to upgrade to Windows 10 version 1903 and have games installed that utilize BattlEye.

  • Make sure you have the latest version of your games so that you have the latest version of BattlEye. (Some game platforms allow you to validate your game files, which can confirm that your installation is fully up to date.)
  • Uninstall BattlEye using https://www.battleye...UninstallBe.exe, and then reopen your game.
  • Restart your PC, and open the game again.
  • Uninstall and reinstall your game.

This problem has been plaguing Windows Insiders who have been testing Windows 10 version 1903 builds for quite some time. With this version's release to the public, now everyone is impacted by this issue.

If you discover a game running an outdated version of BattlEye, you should post feedback using the Feedback Hub and also send an email to the game developer to explain the issue.
